Review: War by Mur Lafferty

On November 21, 2011, in Book Review, Cathy Russell, by Catherine Russell

In War, the fifth and final installment of the Afterlife series by Mur Lafferty, the author manages to merge steampunk, mythology, and pirates in an altogether fascinating and entertaining way. While the Dark gains a firmer hold, Kate and Daniel fight to free the imprisoned gods of the newest world. But will they find them in time to battle off the forces of Chaos?

Together, all the gods may band together to fight the Dark that threatens not only Heaven and Earth, but the world of the newly born gods – a place where cities float while others thrive beneath the ocean, and shops sell ideas wrapped in novelty packages. However, not all gods seem up to the challenge. While Barris the sun god spends his days in a stupor, Fabrique the goddess of clockwork and Gamma the warrior messenger goddess use their skills to prepare for the coming battle – all under the guidance of Kate and Daniel.

When the final gods are freed though, will they agree to fight the war they’ve been recruited for? And when the mistakes of Kate and Daniel’s past surface, the future of all worlds will hang in the balance.

This is the last and best book of the Afterlife series. If you haven’t read the previous books, go read them now. And if you have, this final book is your dessert. Enjoy the treat.

  1. Thanks, Catherine. I do need to dive into my ebooks, or even the podcasts and finish the series. I’m still only 2/5 done…
