Interesting … John, I was actually thinking of “Pour Some Sugar on Me” as an example of a nonsensical rock song just before you brought it up.
I’m another guy who grew up listening to classic country and couldn’t stand it as an adult, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve relaxed that bias a bit, especially when I consider the musicianship involved. Last year, I had the opportunity to play guitar in the backing band for a local country artist at a benefit. The gig ultimately fell through, but we practiced for months. The artist was a huge Glen Campbell fan, so we learned several of his songs. Though I had always known Glen was a phenomenal guitarist, I had never tried to play his music. It was an eye-opener, and renewed my respect for a lot of classic country artists.
