In episode 188 of the Functional Nerds Podcast, Patrick Hester and John Anealio talk with author Elizabeth Bear.
About Elizabeth:
Elizabeth Bear was born on the same day as Frodo and Bilbo Baggins, but in a different year. When coupled with a childhood tendency to read the dictionary for fun, this led her inevitably to penury, intransigence, and the writing of speculative fiction. She is the Hugo, Sturgeon, Locus, and Campbell Award winning author of 25 novels and almost a hundred short stories..
This week’s picks:
- Elizabeth: We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler
- John: The Legend of Korra Book One: Air (Amazon Prime)
- Patrick: Star Trek: The Animated Series (Netflix)

I’m listening to the podcast now. At about 4:00 you talked about getting a good headset. Can you recommend one?
That’s difficult. I just don’t like them…

Aww, I thought Bear was going to write an Ian Banks-like sf novel next.
She does have that Space Opera on her to-do list, Tam. 🙂
That question about who edited the series was a good one, Patrick. Beth Meacham is going on my Hugo ballot next year.
Cool. By the way, a good animated Star Trek episode to check out is “The Slaver Weapon”, based on a classic Larry Niven short story, “The Soft Weapon”. Plus, it stars Spock, with no Kirk in sight. It’s probably on youtube.
