In the 144th episode of the Functional Nerds podcast, Patrick Hester and John Anealio welcome blogger Justin Landon.
About Justin/Staffer’s Book Review:
Staffer’s Book Review is a blog maintained by Justin Landon. It began in spring of 2011 with a review of James S.A. Corey’s Leviathan Wakes. Initially inspired to jot down thoughts to help further his own writing, Justin soon became enamored with the review process itself. Since then he’s written hundreds of reviews, cementing a deep love for genre fiction, but also a deep fascination with the publishing industry.
Today, Staffer’s Book Review is as much a commentary about the state of science fiction and fantasy as it is a place of review. Interviews, short essays, and industry insider pieces are common.
This week’s Picks:
- John: The Way of Kings
- Justin: The Flames of Shadam Khoreh
- Patrick: Red Dawn

Great conversation, guys, and a good inside look on the Night shade thing.
Justin answered a question I’ve had on my mind, accidentally, about the tangential topic of review copies, and unfortunately confirmed the answer I’ve had in my head about it.
